F1 Spanish Grand Prix: Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu, and Sauber seeking ‘comprehensive improvements’ f,spanish,grand,prix,valtteri,bottas,zhou,guanyu,and,sauber,seeking,comprehensive,improvements,sbnation,com,front-page,formula-one,2024-formula-one

The 2024 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix arrives with nine of the ten teams having enjoyed a points finish this year.

Sauber, however, is still seeking their first positive result of the campaign.

While both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu have shown pace at times this season, the team still has nothing to show for their efforts over the 2024 F1 campaign. Earlier in the season the team was undone by a problem in the pits, and continued lengthy pit stops turned promise into heartbreak.

Now they arrive at the Spanish Grand Prix, the first race of an F1 tripleheader, knowing they need “comprehensive improvements” yet still “confident” in their ability to finally break through into the points.

“We return to Europe after a challenging weekend in Montreal, determined to bounce back at the first possible occasion. The team is united, we understand that comprehensive improvements are essential across all areas, but we remain confident in our ability to compete for points once again,” described Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi.

“The tight margins in this sport mean that even the smallest enhancement can be pivotal, particularly in qualifying. Improving our single-lap performance is vital to positioning ourselves better on race day and targeting a top-10 finish,” continued Alunni Bravi. “Our dedication and hard work will be key to turning our season around and everyone, both trackside and back in Hinwil, is ready to embrace the challenge ahead.”

While Bottas has yet to secure his first points of the F1 season, the driver is coming off his best athletic result of the 2024 calendar year. The driver and his partner Tiffany Cromwell participated in the FNLD GRVL cycling event this past week the duo helped organize.

Bottas captured his first gravel race win, while Cromwell secured victory in the women’s 177 kilometer race

Having tasted success on the bike recently, Bottas is now hoping for more success on the track.

“It’s good to be back in Barcelona, a place that we know like the back of our hands. This is a place that always suited me and feel I can be at my best here. It’s a circuit that has no secrets for the teams: we have reams of data about it, in every condition and with every variable accounted for so, once again, it will be the finest details that will make the difference, especially on Saturday,” described Bottas. “Although we haven’t been as strong in the last few races as we should be, we are confident in our abilities. The team has put in tremendous amounts of effort to understand our issues and improve our performance. It’s a tight field, but with improved qualifying, we know we can be back in the fight for points again.”

While his teammate is not coming off similar athletic success during his week away from the track, Zhou is also hopeful for a positive result in Barcelona.

“I’m excited to be back racing again, and I am determined to get back into the fight for points,” described Zhou. “Unfortunately, the last few races didn’t go well for me and the team, but we are determined to bounce back. We’ve used our little break wisely to identify issues and work hard to be competitive again.

“I have some good memories of Barcelona – last year’s race was a lot of fun and I brought home some points, too. It’s a track we know well and that should mean there will be no surprises – it’ll be all about ultimate performance,” added the Sauber driver. “It’ll be crucial for us to start strong: nailing our setup early into the free practice sessions with lots of running to put us in a good position for qualifying and ultimately the race.”

To date, the team’s best results have come in the past two weeks, when Bottas placed 13th in the Monaco Grand Prix, and then 13th again in Montreal during the Canadian Grand Prix. Perhaps that momentum — and Bottas’ success in FNLD GRVL — gives the team the boost they need to finally open their account in Barcelona.

Bryson DeChambeau wins 43 million see full US Open payout

After two top 10s at the Masters and PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau came out on top at the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

The LIV Golf captain held off Rory McIlroy, thanks to a phenomenal bunker shot he had on the 18th. His par save on the last gave DeChambeau the win by one, as he took home his second U.S. Open title since 2020.

His bank account will see $4.3 million added to it because of his win.

Funny enough, DeChambeau’s remarkable par save on 18 reminded many of his hero, Payne Stewart, who holed an 18-footer to win in 1999. Granted, DeChambeau’s par attempt was a little shorter than Stewart’s, but it was a special moment for the former SMU golfer.

In his three major championship starts this season, DeChambeau has won a total of $6,993,000. His tie for 6th at the Masters awarded him with $695,000. He then took home $1,998,000 for placing second at the PGA Championship and won $4,300,000 this week at the U.S. Open.

McIlory’s solo second place did earn him $2,322,000, bringing his season total to $10,034,665, which puts him third behind Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler.

Ludvig Åberg tied for 12th with Sergio Garcia and added $409,279 to his bank account. The Swedish phenom now sits fifth on the PGA Tour money list for the 2024 season, as he has earned a total of $7,686,998 to date.

Let’s check out how much each player made this week at Pinehurst.

Angel Reese whacks Caitlin Clark in head for Flagrant-1 foul, and WNBA refs got it right angel,reese,whacks,caitlin,clark,in,head,for,flagrant,foul,and,wnba,refs,got,it,right,sbnation,com,front-page,wnba,draftkings

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese entered the WNBA has household names after their electric rivalry in women’s college basketball. Reese’s LSU team beat Clark’s Iowa team in the 2023 national championship game when both players were juniors. They met again in the Sweet 16 as seniors, and Clark and the Hawkeyes got revenge by ending LSU’s season.

Clark was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft to the Indiana Fever. Reese went No. 7 overall to the Chicago Sky. There’s already a budding rivalry between their pro teams after Chicago’s Chennedy Carter hip-checked Clark earlier this season in a play that started a nauseating amount of national discourse. Part of the problem with that play was the refs ruled Carter’s cheap shot as a common foul — until the league changed it to a Flagrant foul the next day.

As the Sky and Fever met again on Sunday in a nationally broadcast game on CBS, Clark was again hit with a hard foul, but this time the refs got the call right. As Clark was driving to the basket, Reese went for the block and hit her hard in the head. The officials called for a review and determined it was a Flagrant-1 foul, meaning Clark got two free throws and then Indiana got the ball. Watch the play here:

This isn’t a dirty play or intentional cheap shot. Clark went for the layup, Reese tried to recover for the block, and while going for the ball she whacked Clark in the head.

Clark looked just fine after the sequence, scoring nine points in the last five minutes of the third quarter. Hopefully she’s okay because hard hits to the head are nothing to play around with.

The Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark rivalry will keep going strong in the WNBA. It’s must-see TV every time these two players matchup.

Men’s College World Series: Jace LaViolette and Texas A&M deny Florida men,s,college,world,series,jace,laviolette,and,texas,a,m,deny,florida,sbnation,com,front-page,college-baseball,college-world-series,ncaa-baseball-tournament

Cade Kurland thought he had done it.

After a delay of over four hours due to severe weather in the Omaha area, the final game of the opening round of the 2024 Men’s College World Series between Florida and Texas A&M finally got underway after 11:00 p.m. local time. The Aggies took a 3-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning, powered by a pair of runs in the second inning and one more in the third as they built a 3-0 lead.

But the Gators did not go quietly into the night. Florida put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Aggies’ advantage to just 3-2, and that was the score when the Gators came to bat in the top of the ninth inning. After Brody Donay struck out to start the ninth, center fielder Michael Robertson — a hero for Florida in the 2023 MCWS double-elimination round — got on board with a single to bring Kurland to the plate, representing the go-ahead run.

After the count got to 1-1, Kurland got a backdoor breaking ball that he drove to right, putting everything he had into the swing.

It was almost enough:

Instead of the two-run shot he thought it was off the bat, right fielder Jace LaViolette used every inch of his 6’6 frame to climb the wall in right field, and deny Kurland of the go-ahead blast.

Leaving the Florida second baseman stunned:

LaViolette might have had a quiet night at the plate, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks, but he put up monster numbers at the dish for the Aggies this season, slashing .311/.453/.751 with 28 home runs.

And he can flash the leather when he needs to.

College World Series: Kentucky’s Nolan McCarthy gets a special message from a MLB legend after heroic slide college,world,series,kentucky,s,nolan,mccarthy,gets,a,special,message,from,a,mlb,legend,after,heroic,slide,sbnation,com,front-page,college-baseball,college-world-series,ncaa-baseball-tournament

Kentucky’s Nolan McCarthy scored a run that will live on in the legacy of the Wildcats’ baseball program, as the outfielder scored from second base on a passed ball late in the team’s Super Regionals game against Oregon State. The run gave Kentucky a 3-2 lead in the late innings, and would hold up as the winning run.

McCarthy’s heads-up play included a head-first slide that reminded many of something you would see from the legendary Pete Rose. Watch as the Kentucky outfielder notices that the pitcher is not covering home plate, and then lunges into Wildcats’ lore:

Among those who were reminded of Rose? Doug Flynn, a Kentucky alum and a former teammate of “Charlie Hustle” who won two World Series titles as a teammate of Rose’s on the Cincinnati Reds. Flynn reached out to Rose via text, including a picture of McCarthy’s slide, and Rose returned the message, with one of his own for McCarthy:

“Tell him to keep having fun. However, the only way to have fun is to win. Everybody’s in a better mood when you win. You can’t win every game but you should want to,” Rose texted.” Field, hit, be a good baserunner. Don’t care who you are. Three-for-10 and you’re having a good day. Play some good defense and have fun.

“I made 10,000 outs so don’t worry about it.”

McCarthy and the rest of the Wildcats are in the middle of their first game in Omaha against NC State, and perhaps Charlie Hustle is watching along with the rest of us.

Taylor Swift is a … Mecole Hardman fan? taylor,swift,is,a,mecole,hardman,fan,sbnation,com,front-page,nfl,draftkings

The Kansas City Chiefs unveiled their latest Super Bowl rings on Thursday, with everyone and their grandmother there.

Except for Taylor Swift, the noted football junkie and girlfriend of Chiefs TE Travis Kelce Swift was on tour in England, but burned the midnight oil to hop on Instagram live to help the team celebrate their new rings.

That’s real love right there. It was probably super late in Liverpool but she was up watching the team get rings, pure loyalty, love to see it.

However…I had no idea she was grinding Mecole Hardman film. Hardman re-signed with the Chiefs in the off-season and I’m assuming she’s very excited about his fit in the offense, but with the signing of Hollywood Brown and the drafting of Xavier Worthy it makes Hardman’s skillset a bit redundant. In her song ‘So High School’ off of her latest album The Torturned Poets Society Swift says of herself and Kelce, “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle.” But did Swift watch any Worthy tape, or see any Hollywood Brown film from the past few years? Hardman would be the designated jet sweep guy, but Skyy Moore already does that.

I’m afraid to say it, but: Taylor Swift does not, in fact, know ball.

LIV Golf’s Brooks Koepka hilariously entertains fans, reads mean tweets liv,golf,s,brooks,koepka,hilariously,entertains,fans,reads,mean,tweets,sbnation,com,front-page,golf,us-open-golf,golf-majors,golf-opinions,liv-golf

LIV Golf’s Smash GC posted a video of their captain, Brooks Koepka, reading mean tweets, which showed golf fans a side of him that many rarely see. Many know the LIV Golf captain to have a serious demeanor, but Koepka has a fun side, too.

The short video saw him read a series of tweets that even caused him to laugh audibly.

One of the tweets that made him chuckle the hardest was, “Suck it in, fat boy.”

Koepka could not control his laughter with that one and responded with a dig about himself.

“I’ve been trying, bro. I got the dad bod going. I’m not worried about it anymore.”

The final tweet threw a cheap shot at Patrick Reed as Twitter user Red Tsunami said, “The worst human in professional golf. Even worse than Patrick Reed.”

However, Koepka came to his fellow LIV player’s aide.

“That’s actually kind of funny. Patrick Reed is a good dude, too,” Koepka said as he laughed.

Most tweets were off the wall and completely out of context, making it even funnier.

Reading mean tweets is a trend that has been around for a long time, beginning on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show in 2012 for Twitter’s sixth anniversary.

Celebrities and athletes would read what people said about them on X, formerly known as Twitter. It is rare for a trend to last this long, but there is something hilarious about seeing famous people read what everyday people say about them.

Hopefully, this video is one of many parts that will give us a look into Koepka’s personality and what people say about golfers on the internet. It may even spark the other LIV Golf teams to create “Reading Mean Tweets” content.
