Golf fashion continues to be one of the major discussions of the 2024 PGA Tour season. The players brought it at the John Deere Classic.

That said, fashion is a subjective topic with no right answer.

Not everyone likes risks and prefers traditional outfits, but there are ways to be trendy and traditional. This week saw a mixture of those two things as the young guys control the best-dressed list.

Only one of the veterans made the list. The young guys continue to show how versatile golf fashion can be.

Let’s break down the five best-dressed players from the John Deere Classic.

5. Ben Griffin

Ben Griffin’s different-colored pants put him on the list this week. The blue pants and white shirt were trendy but not too loud on Sunday. Griffin’s Lord Abbett logo matched his pants, and that is the attention to detail we love to see. He also wore pink pants earlier in the week, which were fabulous.

A bright pair of pants with a neutral top is on trend and something anyone can pull off.

4. Michael Thorbjornsen

John Deere Classic, Michael Thorbjornsen, Davis Thompson

PGA Tour rookie Michael Thorbjornsen had four days of solid outfits. His computer glitch polo with the gray pants on Sunday was a favorite. His green moment earlier in the week was also lovely. Adidas continues to put their younger players in these fun outfits, and boy, are they pulling them off.

Thorbjornsen looks cool without trying too hard, and I like the different gray for his hat. It works and does not clash.

Rating: 8.5/10

3. Jordan Speith

John Deere Classic, Jordan Spieth, Davis Thompson

Jordan Spieth finally made the best-dressed list for this green-and-black moment. He won the John Deere Classic in a green polo, and this outfit feels like a reimagination. The small pattern makes it trendy but different. Spieth’s Sunday outfit looked good as well. Even when he wore orange, it was a better choice than the former Texas Longhorn has worn in recent weeks.

He is the only PGA Tour veteran to make the best-dressed list as the youngsters show off. However, I’ll give it to Spieth — his outfits for the John Deere Classic were probably the best he has looked all season.

2. Luke Clanton (a)

John Deere Classic, Luke Clanton, Davis Thompson

Luke Clanton, a rising junior at Florida State University, brought the vibes to Illinois. His pink, black and white polo looked incredible, especially with the black hat. Clanton’s all-black look for Sunday was also sharp.

He may still be in college, but the 20-year-old knows how to dress.

Rating: 9.5/10

1. Davis Thompson

Davis Thompson’s first PGA Tour victory saw him run away with it to win by four shots. He was red hot on the golf course and stayed in his world. The former Georgia Bulldog could not be phased. His fashion choices this week were more on the traditional side, as Nike tends to lean toward, but there were still moments that pushed him to the top spot.

The pants from Saturday’s round were blue-gray. They looked almost baby blue in some lighting, while they were grayer at other times. The black on that light pant looked so good, especially when the blue tones popped. It was a memorable outfit because those pants are not generally paired with an all-black shirt. However, it works.

Thompson is among the only Nike athletes who look good in the confetti shirt. He wore the blue one on Sunday, which looked fantastic on his skin tone.

It was a solid week for the 25-year-old on the course and with his fashion choices.

The John Deere Classic is one of the staples on the PGA Tour, as it has helped catapult many player’s careers.

Has anyone thought about what the PGA Tour players’ equipment equivalent would be? With some of the coolest tee markers, why not keep the fun going by comparing players and farm equipment?

Twitter user “Tweeth Mitchell,” asked the same question, which led to a collaboration to create six players and what John Deere equipment they would be.

While it is a niche topic, it is still fun to think about and come up with comparisons.

Let’s discuss which equipment matches the players at the John Deere Classic, as we introduced “The Farm Team.”

Frontier RC-20 Rotary Cutter: Denny McCarthy

The Frontier RC20 is known for mowing down the competition with precision, just like sharpshooter Denny McCarthy. Because of his accuracy, McCarthy is among the favorites this week. Look for him to go for flag sticks at every opportunity.

The T6 Combine is a heavy-duty piece of machinery with a wide body and a lot of power, just like Sepp Straka, the 2023 John Deere Classic champion.

Straka usually plays well at TPC Deere Run, and there will be plenty of opportunities to harvest birdies this week. Like a heavy-duty machine, sometimes it takes Straka time to warm up, but once he does, he will go lower.

When you need to make hay while the sun shines, you need the 9500 Self-Propelled Forage Harvester and Neal Shipley. No one has done that better with limited opportunities than Shipley.

He became the first player since Viktor Hovland in 2019 to win low-amateur at both the Masters and US Open. The former Ohio State Buckeye recorded a T20 finish last week at Rocket Mortgage in his PGA Tour debut as a professional.

R4023 Sprayer: Jordan Spieth

Two-time John Deere Classic winner Jordan Spieth is a player known for spraying the ball. He fits the bill to match perfectly with the R4023 Sprayer.

Spieth won his first Tour event here in 2013, but he will need to control his spray tendency if he wants to win the John Deere Classic for the third time in five starts. He fired a 2-under 69 in Round 1, but he will need to go low if he expects to make the cut.

He is poised for another huge week in the quad cities. Driving accuracy, approach play and clutch putting are all crucial skills at TPC Deere Run, so Poston should be able to leverage those areas for a high finish this week.

The Netflix star looks to get his way into the FedEx Cup playoffs, and a strong finish at the John Deere Classic will help him get closer to that goal.

With summer in full swing across the United States, you can play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. We highlighted the 10 things all golfers should do during a round, but now we want to list 10 mistakes all golfers should avoid every time they play:

10. Never leave your cart in front of green; always towards back or near next tee

You should park your cart at the closest point between the green and the next tee. That point should also be in the back of the green, so you are not walking towards the fairway you just played, further delaying the group behind you. Cart etiquette is important, but so is using common sense.

9. Speaking of carts, keep them 30 feet away from greens and tees

You should never bring your cart close to the green unless you have a medical condition forbidding you from walking a considerable distance.

The same can be said for teeing areas.

8. No need to take more than three practice swings

The pace of play on a course is important. And no, you are not on the PGA Tour. So do not take more than three practice swings and waste everyone’s time, including yours.

I usually take two to get in a rhythm, then swing away.

7. Don’t arrive less than 20 minutes before tee time

Scrambling to the first tee in a dizzying hurry is terrible, but it angers the pro shop staff, too. Be there on time so you can ease into your round and have a proper warmup.

6. Don’t skip out on the putting green beforehand

You will have more strokes on the green than anywhere else. It’s essential to get the speed of the greens down beforehand so you don’t make a mess of things over the first couple of holes.

5. Missed ball marks damage greens

Fix your ball marks.

Nobody wants to play on damaged greens, and nobody wants a good putt disrupted by a bump.

4. Don’t place wedges/clubs in rough

Every golfer has made the mistake of leaving a club behind at some point.

If you bring your wedge or short iron to a green, put it on the green or fringe—somewhere easily visible. I usually place clubs next to the flagstick—a good reminder not to forget them, too.

3. Replace divots, fix ball marks

Treat the golf course like your own home.

Replace divots and use dirt mix if available. And always, always repair your ball marks on the greens. Fix another one, too. A course’s most valuable assets are the greens—take care of them.

2. The five-minute rule

If you need to take more than five minutes looking for a golf ball, it is clearly not in the spot you think it is—or it is buried in the rough where you would struggle to hack it out.

Take a drop and move on.

1. Don’t be too hard on yourself

It’s a frustrating game that even angers Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, and Bryson DeChambeau. Have fun.

July is here, and the heat came with it.

Golfers do not care how hot it is — they will play 18 regardless of the heat index. From raging storms to triple-digit temperatures, if someone has a tee time, they’re more often than not making it happen.

There are plenty of items that golfers can take with them on the cart to stay cool and hydrated.

An honorable mention is if someone is taking a caddie, think of them as well. Pack a couple of water bottles, an extra cooling rag, or something that will make a difference. They usually walk in that 100-degree weather, so make your experience better by showing love to the caddie. They will appreciate you even more if you think of them in this heat.

Remember to tip them if they did a good job as well. Again, they’re walking in hot conditions, chasing the ball all over; it is the least a player can do.

So, without further delay, let’s examine five things that will help players stay cool on the golf course and beat this heat.

5. A Good hat to shade you from the sun and a solid SPF

The first step to staying cool on the golf course is wearing a hat that will shade you from the sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen, either. Both are needed to not only stay cool but protect your skin.

Bucket hats are great for shading your face and neck. Joel Dahmen wears one after having cancer earlier in his life.

There are also options for breathable hats that help keep the head from overheating.

There are many different sunscreens on the market, but my favorite is the Super Goop. This company has mineral and regular sunscreen options.

Super Goop Sunscreen

SuperGoop is perfect for the golf course. It lasts a long time and is great with sweat. They have SPF 50 and 30, which is chock-full of antioxidants and other great ingredients for the skin.

The spray is great for the golf course, but they also have a fantastic mineral face and lip SPF product. We included the “Play Bundle” because it’s a great way to test the product.

Regardless of the sunscreen brand, having a hat and keeping the SPF on is crucial to enjoying golf this summer.

4. Hydration Tools

Purchase Liquid IV packets to put in water bottles or electrolyte tablets. Staying hydrated includes drinking water and replacing any lost electrolytes.

Purchase a pack of your favorite brand and stuff some of those into the golf bag. Having those on hand will be a lifesaver when an extra boost is needed.

3. Portable fan

A misting fan is incredible for the summer, especially while on the golf course. It keeps a steady breeze on you while providing a little spritz of water.

A portable misting fan that can be propped on the golf cart is essential during summer. This option has excellent reviews, and the price is not too steep.

People can also use wearable cooling devices. These gadgets sit around the necks and blow cool air around the head. Many women wore them at the Tour Championship last year, and they are another great option for staying cool while playing golf. 2. Cooling Rags/ Cooler

Many people know about the Frogg Toogs Chilly Pad cooling towels, and it is time to buy one. Also, get a small cooler and keep ice in it. Drench the towel in water, and it will keep the heat away. These rags will keep you cool between shots and last for hours.

A cooler is great for snacks and drinks, but you can also throw in the towel to keep it colder longer.

1. Emotional Support Water

Stay cool on the golf course by purchasing a water bottle. Channel your inner Rickie Fowler and snag a 30-40oz bottle to carry with you. Do not forget those stickers, either—they are a necessity.

Fill it up often because staying hydrated is essential in the summer.

The heat can drain you quickly, so the more water, the better. A reminder, though: While many people like cold water, it can shock your system on a hot day. Room-temperature water may not be as refreshing, but it does help the most with hydration.

If you insist on cold water, remember to sip it. Do not chug it, as that can also cause issues.

As we all celebrate our patriotic freedom today, today’s topic is Fourth of July golf fashion. With the John Deere Classic starting today, we wanted to give a July 4th fashion guide — the Do’s and Do not’s.

A patriotic outfit can quickly go from trendy to loud, so let’s examine what works and does not for your Fourth of July golf round.

The Do’s of Patriotic Golf Fashion

Stick to the basics

Solid-color pants or polos are a great choice. Red, White and Blue are three great primary colors for building outfits.

Patterns are still fine; I’m not saying to avoid them, but just be smart about it.

Many pieces from the J. Lindeberg Team USA line are perfect options for the Fourth of July.

Before everyone freaks out about the bright pattern, the red polo is the classic approach I am talking about. The navy pants are also great.

Let the Pattern be the moment

If an American flag or any kind of pattern is what you want to wear, let it be the moment. Wear a more neutral pair of pants and shoes to match. Try to tie it together by matching the hat to the pants or to one of the colors in the pattern.

Don’t be so predictable

Yes, it is America’s Day of Freedom, but that does not mean American flags must be all over the clothing. Red, White, and Blue are iconic colors that people recognize as patriotic. There are some nice patterns out there that are great for the holiday, but remember, less can be more for days like the Fourth of July.

The Do not’s of Patriotic Golf Fashion

There is only one thing to avoid for golf fashion on the Fourth of July.

Please do not wear the American flag pattern all over

Less is more, especially when it comes to patriotic patterns. Wearing an American flag top and bottoms is way too much. Opt for the flag shirt and solid bottom or vice versa.

Most patriotic pants are too tacky, so avoid those at all costs.

John Daly is likely the only person who can wear those pants and pull them off because he is that confident.

That does not mean you can purchase one American flag item instead of the entire outfit.

Today’s topic is tee markers!

With the John Deere Classic this week, we wanted to look at some of the best tee markers on the PGA Tour.

Various tournament sponsors get so creative with their materials. From paint cans at the Valspar Championship to the little Waste Management dump trucks at the WM Phoenix Open, the creativity just flows.

Earlier this year, the RBC Canadian Open put itself on the list for its rink hole tee markers — goalie helmets.

There are iconic markers like the U.S. Open and other USGA events, but we wanted to do the more unique options for this article. The traditional ones are just as nice, but creativity goes a long way in this instance.

There are plenty of options, but these are the tee markers we consider to be the greatest on the PGA Tour.

The Greatest PGA Tour Tee Markers

Sanderson Farms Championship

Sanderson Farms Championship uses little chickens as tee markers. However, it’s also a way for the title sponsor to engage with the community. Patients at Friends of Children’s Hospital paint the chickens that sit atop the white Sanderson Farms boxes on each hole.

Valspar Championship

Of course, Valspar is a paint company, so using paint cans as tee markers is on-brand for them. People immediately know the title sponsor because of this, too. We still want to know if paint is in these cans—can someone get this answer for us?

RBC Canadian Open — The Rink Hole

Each year, the RBC Canadian Open changes up “The Rink” hole, but it is one of the most unique things on the PGA Tour. From referee volunteers to the goalie helmet tee markers, it is the most Canadian thing at the Canadian Open. This year, the tournament added an organist to add even more of a facade to the lore.

Wells Fargo Championship

Another iconic tee marker is the Wells Fargo stagecoaches. These were used at the Wells Fargo Championship, but now the tournament opts for the box one with the logo.

Regardless, it’s another excellent marker that is so on-brand.

John Deere Classic

Lastly, the John Deere Classic’s tee markers are truly iconic. The little tractors and various equipment are so creative and fun. John Deere understands its brand, and these tee markers prove it.

Let’s have a little fun today! Last week, a photo of this guy who got Paige Spiranac’s signature tattooed on his arm went viral. It inspired us to search the internet to see what kind of golf tattoos people get.

Some people love sports so much that they want a permanent reminder on their skin. They love it so much that they will get logos, players and other moments inked on them. I even have a University of Georgia ‘G’ on my ankle, so I understand people’s love for their teams.

Let’s look at how dedicated these fans are to golf with their tattoos.

Golf Tattoos

The tattoo that sparked this post was that a fan got Spiranac to sign his arm and made that signature permanent.

“Met Tony at an @xgolfamerica event where he asked me to sign his arm. An hour later he comes back with it tattooed on him,” Spiranac wrote.

This tweet has over a million views — it went nuts.

This post sparked us to ask our readers to send in some submissions. I also took a deep dive down the Twitter (now known as X) rabbit hole to find golf-themed tattoos, and this is what I saw.

A Tiger Woods logo — maybe the guy will get the new Sun Day Red logo now that the “TW” is no longer the one Tiger uses.

Another Tiger Woods inspired piece went viral last year. It is a collage of a Tiger with face tattoos, a chain, and a mouth grill. It also includes the iconic club twirl from the 2009 Presidents Cup. This is a work of art, even if it is a little scary.

Tiger won the 2019 Masters; of course, someone recreated it on their calf.

A Phil Mickelson tattoo? It seems Nolan got Mickelson’s logo on the back of his calf after he won the 2021 PGA Championship. Impressive.

This fan got the Callaway logo on his chest, and the brand noticed. It seems Callaway also hooked him up with a full bag of clubs.

These are just a few of the tattoos we found.

That said, fashion is a subjective topic with no right answer.

Akshay Bhatia does this well. He blends traditional and trendy together by wearing Greyson Clothier items. This week is more about finding traditional outfits that look fantastic. The bright patterns are great, but sometimes, it is nice to see the guys pull off a classic look.

So, without further ado, check out the five best-dressed golfers from the first two days at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

5. Joel Dahmen

This subtle pattern, light khaki pants, and Joel Dahmen’s signature bucket hat make a great outfit. His style is for those who take a little risk but not too much.

The pattern is just enough to make it trendy. That shade of blue looks fantastic on his skin tone. He wears Travis Mathew, and the brand does a great job making sure what he wears looks solid on him. It also shows how versatile the brand is because anyone of any age can pull off that pattern.

4. Chris Kirk

Rocket Mortgage Classic, Chris Kirk, Akshay Bhatia

Chris Kirk is No. 4 on this list because he always wears traditional outfits but finds a way to play with a little color. He wore green on Thursday, and this shade of red looks great on him.

His beard has a red tone, so these shades go well with it. I also like how he went with a gray belt instead of a traditional black one. Kirk still pays tribute to his college team, the Georgia Bulldogs, without making it too obvious.

3. Min Woo Lee

Min Woo Lee is almost a staple on these best-dressed lists. What Lululemon continues to put him in looks fantastic. It is traditional but trendy because it’s one of the hottest brands on the market.

The lavender with the silver pants looks incredible in his skin tone. He has his signature shades on, and they pull it all together. It will be interesting to see what Lululemon does next in golf because these are great so far. Please give us more color, but keep it up because this is such a vibe that most people would wear.

2. Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler has finally impressed on the fashion front. This blue polo is a phenomenal color for him. The gray belt looks incredible with the white pants, and the white hat pulls it together. The ‘P’ on the hat matches the polo, and I love how the inside of the collar is pink. It’s a pop of color without making it too busy.

However, I want to see less of the little pattern on him and more of these traditional moments because he pulls them off so well. Sometimes, those patterns get tacky, and it does not have a vibe, but this week, Fowler looks awesome.

1. Akshay Bhatia

He leads the tournament and is No. 1 on this list because Akshay Bhatia is the walking definition of traditional but trendy.

This two-tone blue polo from Friday is perfect for his skin tone. The flow, beard and glasses pull it all together. It is a perfect fit. His polo from Thursday was also great because it had a pattern but was not too loud. Greyson Clothier is an ideal choice for Bhatia.

He wears the joggers, which is still a sensitive topic in golf, but he pulls them off. Bhatia is such a vibe. Look good and play good is in full effect for the 22-year-old this week in Detroit.

Tyrrell Hatton’s six-shot victory at LIV Golf Nashville symbolized a breakthrough in more ways than one.

Not only did he win his maiden title on the Saudi-backed circuit, but he also won a professional golf tournament for the first time in more than three years. Hatton’s last victory came on the DP World Tour in January 2021, when he won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship by four strokes.

But it’s not as if the Englishman has sailed into the abyss since then. He has made the cut in 11 straight majors and posted seven top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2023. He even tied for ninth at Augusta National a couple of months after joining LIV Golf.

Hatton has played solid golf over the past few years, which explains why he still ranks among the top 25 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). But now he eyes another breakthrough: a major championship victory.

And with the Open Championship set to be held at Royal Troon next month, Hatton’s game suits that course on the Scottish coast perfectly. In fact, at the 2016 Open, when Royal Troon saw Henrik Stenson fend off Phil Mickelson in one of the greatest final rounds ever, a 24-year-old Hatton tied for fifth. Golf fans did not know much about Hatton then, but he did shoot four rounds of even par or better that week.

“I’ve done well on links courses in the past,” Hatton said after his final round 3-under 68 at Royal Troon in July 2016.

“I think my best performances are on links courses. So I’ve played a lot of links as an amateur, and I’ve just taken that sort of into the province.”

Interestingly, Hatton has not posted a better finish at The Open since then, although he did tie for sixth in 2019 at Royal Portrush. He tied for 20th a year ago at Royal Liverpool and finished in a tie for 11th at St. Andrews the year before.

But now the Englishman will return to Royal Troon as a player to keep an eye on, a much different circumstance than where he stood in 2016, when he arrived as the 68th ranked player in the OWGR. Golf fans know all about Hatton in 2024, not only for his fiery and passionate demeanor but also for his terrific ball-striking and nifty short game—attributes required for Open Championship success.

It seems as if Hatton is due for a major championship breakthrough. Even though we are still three weeks away from having serious discussions about who could win at Royal Troon, Hatton will have to be in that conversation, especially now that he has learned how to win again.

Welcome to Playing Through’s new morning ritual: Golf Talk Today.

Each morning will feature a Golf Talk Today, in which the crew will discuss various elements of the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and other professional golf tournaments.

The final round of the Travelers Championship is here, and to no one’s surprise, Scottie Scheffler is in contention. His best friend, Tom Kim, continues to hold the lead by one stroke, but will he be able to hold off the two-time Masters winner?

Sunday will look different. The PGA Tour moved up tee times for the final round and put the guys into threesomes. With bad weather lurking in the afternoon, the leaders will tee off at 11:15 a.m. ET.

Kim, Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia are in the last group of the day. Let’s discuss Championship Sunday.

Travelers Championship’s final round will be wild:

Saturday saw Cameron Young shoot a historical 59, but his play quickly got overshadowed by Scheffler, Kim, and Bhatia’s play.

He finished tied with Kim at 13-under, but by the end of Saturday’s round, he trailed by five shots.

The afternoon wave fought another weather delay, but that did not matter as the conditions were so soft.

While Kim played well the first three days, Scheffler and Bhatia also did well. They all shot 65 or better in the first three rounds.

Determining a winner on Sunday will likely come down to who can limit mistakes and sign for the most birdies.

Scheffler already has five victories in 2024. He won three Signature Events, the most recent being The Memorial, the 2024 Masters, and The Players.

Can he earn his fourth Signature Event win? Scheffler is so hard to beat right now, so it will be interesting to see if two young bucks like Kim and Bhatia can keep up.

Not to mention, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Sungjae Im and Tony Finau lurk in the groups ahead.

Scheffler did not play well at the U.S. Open, but his game returned to normal on Thursday. Regardless, Championship Sunday will be wild for the Travelers as records could get broken.
