Elly De La Cruz and Oneil Cruz are must-see TV elly,de,la,cruz,and,oneil,cruz,are,must,see,tv,sbnation,com,front-page,mlb,dot-com-grid-coverage

If you’re surveying the baseball landscape for games to watch, I have a pretty good idea of how the process should go for tonight. If your favorite team is playing well, you’re probably going to watch them first. Other than that, if you’re going to pay attention to any baseball game that doesn’t involve your favorite team for the next couple of days then your eyes should be locked in for what’s going on in Cincinnati this week.

At first glance, a matchup between two 37-41 teams in what is collectively the most mediocre division in baseball doesn’t seem like much to write home about. It’s especially the case when you consider that the Cincinnati Reds have only been to the Postseason four times since 2010 and won a grand total of two games in those appearances while the Pittsburgh Pirates only made it three years in a row from 2013 through 2015 and also won a grand total of two playoff games during that span. There hasn’t been much of a reason to pay attention to these two clubs and they haven’t really given anybody a real reason to pay attention to them outside of the occasional insane-looking brawl.

That changes this week, as we’ve now got two very good reasons to tune in to this series: Elly De La Cruz and Oneil Cruz. One of my favorite things about baseball is that despite the everyday nature of the sport, there’s always a chance that if you tune in or go to the ballpark then you’re going to see something that you’ve never seen before. It’s true for any game, it’s especially true when any one of De La Cruz or Cruz is playing in the game and it only doubles when both of them are going to be sharing the same field for at least two-and-a-half hours for the next couple of nights.

While Elly’s exploits on the diamond have been widely documented right here on SB Nation, it’s somewhat understandable that Oneil Cruz’s action has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle when it comes to the Pirates. After all, Bryan Reynolds is still the face of the franchise over there, Andrew McCutchen has returned to wear the only uniform that he’s looked completely right in (outside of maybe these throwback Phillies uniforms) and Paul Skenes has exploded onto the MLB scene and has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the mound. While this hasn’t translated to the Pirates winning ballgames on a regular basis, it’s not completely boring to keep up with the Pirates nowadays.

However, Oneil Cruz is absolutely worth paying attention to because his highlight reel consists of stuff that is scarcely believable at times. This is the guy who currently holds the record for the hardest-hit ball in the Statcast Era of MLB at 122.4 mph and used to hold the record for the hardest throw from an infielder during the Statcast Era with a 97.8 mph laser that he uncorked as a rookie back in 2022. His arm strength is in the 99th percentile. His bat speed is in the 100th percentile, which naturally means that his Average Exit Velocity is also comically high, his Barrel percentage is just as lofty and his Hard-Hit percentage is in the same neighborhood. While he’s not up there with the real burners in terms of foot speed, his 87th-percentile Sprint Speed seems to indicate that he still blaze across the basepaths if needed.

Cruz is still in the process of putting all of these facets together in order to become a truly great baseball player but his potential is right there for everybody to see. It’s very difficult to figure out who has a higher ceiling than than Cruz and it’s one of many reasons why he doesn’t just have Pirates fans excited about any progress that he can make. If Oneil Cruz can realize his full potential at some point, it’ll be essentially as if a fully maxed-out create-a-player from the video games has come to life.

Millions of baseball fans have always dreamed of somehow becoming a physical force of nature who could run like the wind, throw harder than some pitchers and hit dingers nearly 500 feet while basically leaving a mark on everything else he hits. The difference between aspirational video gamers and Oneil Cruz is that he has the real and tangible chance to actually become what was always figured to be a digital wild dream for most fans.

Speaking of players who have ceilings that are higher than the Empire State Building, that’s where Elly De La Cruz came in. While there’s debate as to whether or not Oneil Cruz is the top star for the Pittsburgh Pirates, there’s no debate when it comes to the situation in Cincinnati. Elly De La Cruz is the man around there — whether we’re talking name recognition, highlights or production, Elly has got it all in spades.

As I alluded to in the aforementioned links to other articles about Elly De La Cruz, the guy just appears to be a sentient highlight reel. You want tape-measure home runs? He’s got em. You want Web Gems that would’ve made him a staple on Baseball Tonight? He’s got those, too. You want to see him tear up the basepaths? He’s got you on that as well. You want to see him do it all in the process of terrorizing the Dodgers? It’s funny you should ask because there’s video evidence of that as well.

What makes it so gratifying to watch Elly De La Cruz do the things that he does on a nightly basis is that it was plainly obvious from the moment that he showed up in Major League Baseball that he was capable of becoming this type of player. However, just like Oneil Cruz right now, it was also evident that he still needed to put it all together. After all, you can do plenty of amazing things on the field but it won’t particularly matter all that much if you’re hitting .235/.300/.410 with a .305 wOBA and only 89 wRC+, which is what he finished with in 2023 after playing 98 games. Heading into action on June 25, De La Cruz is now hitting .249/.342/.464 with a .352 wOBA and a wRC+ of 123. It’s clicking for him even when he’s not doing anything spectacular and his team leading fWAR of 3.3 is also proof that he hasn’t sacrificed any other portion of his game in order to improve in another facet.

He’s still stealing bases at an absurd clip — he’s already surpassed his stolen base total of 35 last season, he’s currently sitting on 37 stolen bags and the sky is the limit when it comes to how high that number can get. His defense has also improved as he’s no longer simply leaning on his prodigious arm strength. He’s currently in 95th percentile of fielders with an OAA of 6. He’s steadily turning into a complete baseball player, which should be exciting for both Reds fans when it comes to potentially turning the ship around in Cincinnati and it’s also exciting for us neutral fans since that just means he’s capable of doing something truly absurd no matter if he’s hitting, fielding or running the bases. Stuff that was figured to be impossible in the past is just part of another day at the ballpark for Elly De La Cruz.

Elly De La Cruz and Oneil Cruz may not be miracle workers who can drag their respective teams to the promised land but they’re both doing more than their fair share of the work in making their respective teams fun to watch. While Oneil Cruz is still in the process of showing quick glimpses of his potential, we’re starting to see Elly De La Cruz fully blossom into a real-deal superstar in baseball. Both of them will be on the same field this week when the Pirates and Reds face off with each other in Cincinnati. While these two teams may not command your attention, these two players certainly should.

Scottie Scheffler’s Travelers win produces TV ratings bump for CBS scottie,scheffler,s,travelers,win,produces,tv,ratings,bump,for,cbs,sbnation,com,golf,golf-pga-tour,golf-news

Scottie Scheffler’s historic sixth win of the season at the Travelers Championship produced a nice ratings bump for CBS Sports and the PGA Tour.

The network delivered its most-watched Travelers Championship final round since 2021, up seven percent from the 2023 edition, which saw New England native Keegan Bradley triumph in front of his hometown crowd.

Sunday’s coverage averaged 2.607 million viewers and peaked with 4.330 million viewers between the 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. ET quarter hour—impressive metrics considering the PGA Tour bumped tee times up an entire hour due to pending weather. The 2.607 million viewers is in reference to the 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET window. It is also worth noting that the playoff between Scheffler and Tom Kim concluded before 5:00 p.m. ET, a full hour before CBS typically concludes its final-round coverage.

In addition, CBS Sports announced that Sunday’s final round was the most-streamed Travelers Championship round ever on its streaming platform, Paramount+. The network did not provide specific numbers related to its streaming service.

Nevertheless, these numbers come on at the end of a thrilling three-week stretch.

Before the Travelers Championship, Scheffler fended off Collin Morikawa at the Memorial, and Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open in one of the best major championships in recent years.

Tiger Woods should play in U.S. Senior Open in 2 years tiger,woods,should,play,in,u,s,senior,open,in,years,sbnation,com,golf,tiger-woods,golf-pga-tour,golf-champions-tour,golf-news

Tiger Woods should play in US Senior Open in 2

The U.S. Senior Open takes center stage this week as Bernhard Langer will look to defend his title at the historic Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

But in two years’ time, another man will meet the eligibility criteria to play, which should intimidate everyone on the PGA Tour Champions. That would be Tiger Woods, the 15-time major winner who has also won nine United States Golf Association (USGA) titles.

Woods won three U.S. Junior Amateurs and three U.S. Amateurs during a six-year stretch from 1991 to 1996. He then went on to win three U.S. Open titles, with his first coming at Pebble Beach in 2000 and his last coming at Torrey Pines in 2008. He won his other one at Bethpage Black in 2002.

But as Adam Schupak of Golfweek penned on Monday, a U.S. Senior Open title would put Woods in rare territory. No player has ever won the U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open, and U.S. Senior Open during their career. If Woods were to go on and win a U.S. Senior Open, he would become the most decorated USGA Champion of all time with 10 USGA championships. Woods and Bobby Jones currently possess the all-time record with nine apiece.

“He’d love to win that Grand Slam and get some of the other senior majors on his CV,” Padraig Harrington told Shupak.

“I saw him at the [PNC Championship] and we were just crossing paths and he laughed at me. I won’t say exactly what he said but the gist of it was he can’t wait to get out and beat me.”

Surely, Woods will want to possess those records all on his own. He loves the competition and wants to be recognized as the greatest golfer ever.

But the PGA Tour Champions also allows its competitors to take a cart, which would help Woods immensely. He has struggled to navigate 72 holes in major championships, but having assistance via a cart would eradicate many of those hardships. Yet, the senior majors require players to apply for and receive a cart via the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).

“Taking a cart changes everything for him,” Geoff Ogilvy added to Schupak.

“Interest both from fans and sponsors is going to be through the roof. I think there’s a good chance that Champions Tour ratings can top the PGA Tour when he decides to play. And what else is he going to?”

Woods will definitely play a role in his son Charlie’s budding golf career, as the younger Woods recently qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur later this summer. Outside of that, the 82-time PGA Tour winner can reinvigorate his competitive spirits and boost the Champions Tour by playing. He should go through with it.

And when he does, the golfing world will love it.

Spanish Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton applauds ‘great weekend’ for Mercedes spanish,grand,prix,lewis,hamilton,applauds,great,weekend,for,mercedes,sbnation,com,front-page,formula-one,2024-formula-one

Here is a fun trivia question for you.

Over the past two Formula 1 race weekends, what team has secured the most points?

If you guessed Mercedes then congratulations, you have been paying attention.

The Silver Arrows enjoyed a bit of a breakthrough in Montreal, as George Russell’s third-place finish marked the first podium in a Grand Prix for Mercedes this season. They followed that result with arguably an even better one this past weekend in Barcelona, as Lewis Hamilton qualified third for the Spanish Grand Prix and followed that with his first Grand Prix podium of the year, a third-place finish on Sunday. With Russell finishing just behind him in fourth, Mercedes banked 27 points in Barcelona, a week after notching 28 points in Montreal.

Are the Silver Arrows back?

Maybe not yet, but they are certainly closing the gap to the teams at the front of the grid.

“It’s been a really great weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve been on the podium so I’m very happy! We’re not quite there yet but we’ve taken a huge step in recent races,” hailed Hamilton in the team’s post-race report. “We didn’t quite have the pace to fight with the two guys ahead of us but, if we can deliver more consistently like this, then we will be in a strong position. We are on our way to catching those guys and that is fantastic.”

Russell may have pulled off the move of the race with this stunning double overtake of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen heading into the first turn of the Grand Prix:

He reflected on that move after the race, with a bit of a history lesson.

I was dreaming of making a move like I did into turn one last night,” described Russell. “I didn’t think it would quite come to fruition in the way that it did! I remember Fernando [Alonso] making a similar start in 2013. We had a headwind so I knew I could brake quite late. It was a very satisfying move and felt good to lead a race again. Unfortunately, Max (Verstappen) was too fast for us today, as was Lando. But two podiums in two races is very encouraging as we head to Austria.”

Russell’s overtake might have been the move of the race, but Hamilton’s battle — and pass — of Carlos Sainz Jr. is also worth highlighting:

Like Russell, Hamilton took a moment to recall that battle and overtake.

“I was pleased with my move on Sainz too. I gave him enough room and we both made it through the corner,” recalled Hamilton. “It was an important move for my race, so I was glad to get it done. It’s now on to Austria and we’re looking forward to it.”

Their boss also took a moment to praise those moves, as well as the progress the team has made these past few weeks.

“We can take a lot of positives away from today. We have taken several steps forward in the previous few races and it is good to see these confirmed here in Spain,” began Toto Wolff. “We are not quite there yet, and we have to more to do to catch those ahead. Nevertheless, we are on a positive development trajectory, and it feels good to be back in the game.

“It was also fantastic to pull off two of the best overtakes I’ve seen in a long time. George made a mega start and braked late to take the lead. Lewis’s overtake on Sainz meanwhile was great racing and an important moment for his race,” continued the Silver Arrows boss. “It’s been a while since we’ve been able to enjoy a Grand Prix podium with Lewis, so it was fantastic to see him up there. We’re now looking forward to the next two races in the triple-header and building on the momentum we are establishing.”

Mercedes will now try and continue that momentum on short order, as the grid heads to Red Bull Ring for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. It will get started quickly, as this is one of the F1 Sprint Race weekends on the calendar.

Travelers Championship: Fans’ sensational trolling after protest on 18 travelers,championship,fans,sensational,trolling,after,protest,on,sbnation,com,front-page,golf,golf-pga-tour,golf-fan-reactions

The Travelers Championship saw another playoff finish, but before Scottie Scheffler could earn his sixth PGA Tour win, a distraction happened on the 18th green.

A group of protestors from the Extinction Rebellion interrupted Scheffler, Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia’s group to run onto the course with colored smoke and powder substances.

Police tackled them and quickly put the group into custody. However, they still were able to cause some damage on the 18th green. The protestors did not stop once in handcuffs, though; they challenged officers all the way off the course.

As the agronomy team cleaned up the 18th green, fans chanted USA-USA-USA, sang the Star-Spangled Banner, and chanted profanities at the disrupters. The situation caused the agronomy team and officials to change the hole location for the playoff.

While things settled and the crew made the changes, golf fans on social media took the incident and ran with it. They were quick to make jokes about the situation at hand and even made a dig at the expense of Scheffler.

Check out some of the top-notch reactions to the protest at the Travelers Championship.

The Scheffler tracker gave a live look at the whole incident.

No Laying Up made jokes at Kim for playing slow and blamed the protest on him. Kim seemed to slow things down as the round continued, and watching him over the ball was brutal.

Another hilarious tweet was directed at Canadian golfer Adam Hadwin. Nick Taylor won last year’s RBC Canadian Open. Hadwin tried to celebrate by running onto the green, but instead, a policeman tackled him.

A reaction to this protest would not be the same without Kyle Porter’s “normal sport” joke. There are so many moments in golf that make fans scratch their head, and this protest was one of them.

Thankfully it does not seem anyone in attendance was harmed. The golf course took most of the blow, but nonetheless, fans got a good laugh as the Travelers Championship ended.

LIV Golf: Jon Rahm drops colorful f-bomb amid mid-round drone meltdown liv,golf,jon,rahm,drops,colorful,f,bomb,amid,mid,round,drone,meltdown,sbnation,com,front-page,golf,golf-news,liv-golf

Jon Rahm is one of the most passionate professional golfers. He is also one of many LIV Golf players who use profanities.

His latest f-bomb came during the Sunday round of the LIV Golf Nashville tournament.

He started his round 3-under through his first five holes, then Rahm stepped on the sixth tee at The Grove.

A loud noise allegedly distracted the Spaniard. He hit his tee shot, causing the ball to go left and splash into the water.

Rahm looked back at the drone and lost it.

“Every tournament!” Rahm yelled. “It’s f—ing incredible! Right in my backswing! F—ing drones every time!”

The 2023 Masters winner double-bogeyed the par-4 6th. It dropped him to four shots behind his teammate and the Nashville leader Tyrrell Hatton.

He did get one of those strokes back with a birdie on seven.

This is not the first time Rahm has thrown an f-bomb around at a LIV Golf tournament; it has become a regular occurrence to hear him cuss.

He and Hatton both yelled the four-letter explicative at Augusta National, which caused Padraig Harrington to call them out. Last year, the duo were caught on hot mics at the Ryder Cup.

In February at LIV Golf Mayakoba, Rahm got caught again yelling the f-word.

When Rahm signed with his new tour last December, he was no stranger to how LIV does its tournaments. He knew what he signed up for, but that did not stop him from cussing.

LIV’s motto is “Golf, but Louder,” but at what point does it become too much for players?

How many hot mic moments have to happen for something to change, or will it at all?

Cameron Young channels inner Jim Furyk with astonishing 59 at Travelers cameron,young,channels,inner,jim,furyk,with,astonishing,at,travelers,sbnation,com,front-page,golf,golf-pga-tour,golf-news

Cameron Young took advantage of the soft conditions at TPC River Highlands for round 3 of the Travelers Championship. He fired off an 11-under 59 to tie Tom Kim for the lead at 13-under total.

Young became the first player since Scottie Scheffler in 2020 at TPC Boston to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour. He also became the 12th different player on Tour to shoot sub-60. Jim Furyk did it twice, including his historic 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

The 27-year-old’s previous best score was a 62 from the second round of the 2022 Genesis Invitational.

Young made over 115 feet of putts in the third round, including a 9-foot 7-inch par putt on 18 to secure the 59.

He took Moving Day seriously as Young jumped 42 spots to sit atop the leaderboard.

Young was 5-under through his first four holes after he made three birdies and an eagle on the par-4 3rd. Two more birdies at the 8th and 9th saw him go out in 28 strokes.

Another birdie at the par-5 13th, followed by his second eagle of the day at 15, put him at 10-under. He just needed one birdie to record a sub-60 round with three holes left. That birdie came on the par-4 17th as Young sank a 5-footer to tally his seventh birdie.

However, that par on 18 was his most crucial shot. It was not an easy putt, and Young had ice in his veins as he made it without hesitation.

Young has one runner-up finish this year, four top-10s, and five top-25s. However, he has not had his best form since the Masters.

Something clicked in Connecticut, though, as he joined an elite club of sub-60 golfers.

Klay Thompson, Warriors appear headed for divorce in NBA free agency klay,thompson,warriors,appear,headed,for,divorce,in,nba,free,agency,sbnation,com,front-page,nba,nba-free-agency,draftkings

Klay Thompson spent this past season fighting against father time as he played out the final year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors. Thompson still shot the ball well from three-point range (38.7 percent), but it was clear he lost a step in terms of his effectiveness at both ends of the floor.

As the Warriors missed the 2024 NBA Playoffs, speculation about Thompson’s future in free agency became even more intense. With the negotiating window now open between players and their incumbent teams, it’s looking more and more like Thompson and the Warriors are heading for a split.

The Warriors do not have an offer on the table to Thompson right now ahead of NBA free agency, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic. Talks between the Warriors and Thompson are being described as “frozen,” likely leading to the 34-year-old testing the open market for the first time in his career.

Thompson reportedly turned down a two-year, $48 million extension from the Warriors last summer, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. That deal is apparently no longer on the table from Golden State, and it’s possible Thompson won’t see that type of money from any other suitor given the lack of teams with cap space this summer.

Right now, only the Pistons, Magic, 76ers, Jazz, Spurs, and Thunder appear to have a pathway to substantial cap space. Thompson would be a good theoretical fit for a couple of those teams, but only if they decide he’s worth their investment over younger free agents. Orlando has been rumored to have interest in Thompson, but the club reportedly only wants to offer two-year deals to free agents, per Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports. That wasn’t good enough for Thompson a year ago, but at this point he may have no other choice.

The Magic could also choose to spend their money on Nuggets free agent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, according to Fischer. KCP is a few years younger than Thompson, shot the ball better from the outside the last few seasons, and has a superior defensive reputation at this point in his career.

Thompson has spend his entire career with the Warriors since being selected with the No. 11 overall pick by the franchise back in 2012. He has won four championships playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

It would feel so wrong to see Thompson in another uniform, but it sure looks like that’s the way it’s headed. NBA free agency opens up on June 30.

KPMG Womens PGA Championship Nelly Korda among big names to

The LPGA’s third major championship, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, is halfway over. Sahalee Country Club showed its teeth through the first two days.

After Friday’s round, half the field went home, and among those was World No. 1 Nelly Korda.

Korda will not play on the weekend for the second major championship and the third straight week. She started the season with five consecutive wins and earned her sixth at the Mizuho’s Americas Open.

Since that victory, though, things have not gone her way. To miss the cut, Korda shot an 80-70 at the U.S. Women’s Open. This week, she tallied 69-81, her highest professional career score.

Photo by Jorge Lemus/NurPhoto via Getty Images

It was not a good day for the top-ranked player in the world, especially after a strong start to the week on Day 1. Korda started her day by making five bogeys in six of her first holes. She added two more bogeys at the 9th, 11th and 14th before a double bogey at the par-4 15th completely derailed her.

Korda did add one birdie to the card on the par-5 18th, but it was too late.

She is not the only one headed home early. Other notable names who missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship include Anna Nordqvist, Alexa Pano, Emily Kristine Pedersen, Robyn Choi, Nasa Hataoka, Andrea Lee, Danielle Kang, Sophia Popov, Carlota Ciganda, Gemma Dryburgh, Stacy Lewis, and Brittany Lincicome.

Sahalee gave these ladies quite the test, and they were sent home after 36 holes.

Travelers Championship PGA Tour players make golf course look easy

The eighth and final PGA Tour Signature Event is an all-out birdie fest at the Travelers Championship. In the second round, there were 297 birdies and 10 eagles made.

TPC River Highlands has ideal conditions and a field of golfers itching to go low.

This is one of the five no-cut tournaments, and some of the world’s top-ranked golfers are taking advantage of it.

The U.S. Open and Memorial Tournament challenged the best players, so seeing the shortest track on the PGA Tour schedule seems welcomed among the 70 players in the field.

There were 30 players at 67 or better, and only 13 scores over par on Friday.

Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre posted the lowest scores of the day, signing for 8-under 62.

Collin Morikawa fired off a bogey-free 7-under 63. He went out in 29 strokes with six birdies. The two-time major winner added his seventh birdie at the 16th.

“It’s been steady. I haven’t made too many errors, and when I have missed greens, I’ve been able to have stress-free pars and good looks for pars, at least,” Morikawa said. “Shots are going where I want. [I’m] putting the ball in the fairway, and that’s key out here, especially with some nasty rough. Just got to continue that for the next two.”

Tom Hoge and Justin Thomas also shot 7-under 63s. Five guys signed for 6-under 64, including Scottie Scheffler, Sungjae Im and Michael Thorbjorsen, who made his PGA Tour debut this week.

The birthday boy and leader by two shots, Tom Kim, followed his Thursday 62 with a 5-under 65.

Joining Kim with a 65 on Friday are Akshay Bhatia, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Brendon Todd, Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Chris Gotterup. Friday’s 65 marked Schauffele’s second straight round of 65.

Cameron Young carded a 4-under 66 to sit at 2-under total. Eleven different players finished Friday’s round with a 3-under 67.

The field made 32 more birdies and three more eagles in round two of the Travelers Championship. A rain delay halted play, but the entire field finished before darkness took over. Could the course play easier now that it has gotten some moisture on it?

If scores continue, the 54-hole and 72-hole records that Keegan Bradley set last year could be in jeopardy. How low will the final score be on Sunday? Sound off in the comments below.
